Sensitivity reading

What is a sensitivity reader?

A sensitivity reader (also known as an authenticity reader or sensitivity editor) is someone with lived experience of a subject that the author does not share but is writing about. They may be a member of a minority group, for example cultural, racial, religious or disability-related. They provide the author with feedback about their handling of the subject from an ‘insider’ perspective, using their experience and knowledge to identify potentially problematic content, such as stereotypes, inaccuracies, biases and insensitivities. They are usually also professional editors, though a sensitivity read does not involve directly editing the text.

Why use a sensitivity reader?

A sensitivity reader can help:

  • ensure authenticity
  • boost author confidence
  • prevent offence
  • build trust with readers
  • avoid reputational damage to authors and publishers.

By incorporating a sensitivity reader’s feedback and suggestions, authors can have greater confidence in their representation of the topic. Remember, however, that one sensitivity reader is not necessarily representative of their entire demographic group. They can provide useful feedback, and signpost to additional resources, but they do not provide guarantees that your finished text will be well received by all members of a particular community.

What does a sensitivity reader not do?

Sensitivity readers do not:

  • censor books
  • edit the text.

We provide informed feedback and suggestions, but you make the decisions.

What do I provide as your sensitivity reader?

My feedback is provided in three forms:

  • a full report, covering stereotypes, language use, accuracy of portrayals, and biases. Each of these is addressed with specific examples, reasoning (often with references for further research) and possible alternatives/solutions
  • margin comments with feedback directly on specific parts of the text
  • the option for further discussion by email or video call.

Social identities I read for

I offer sensitivity reads for the following perspectives/identities:

  • Christian
  • late-diagnosed autistic woman
  • adoptive parent
  • special needs parent
  • experience of child-to-parent violence
  • Sherlock fandom member.

I can provide more specific information about my lived experience on request – just drop me an email about your project and we can discuss whether I’m a good match.
